Blinded Minds

J.M. Beatty

Since the dawn of time God has shed His light of wisdom and knowledge on His creation. We read in the Old Testament that "…the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea…" (Isa 11:9; Hab 2:14). How great is the revelation of divine glory with holy knowledge and wisdom. We know that the word of God is true, then why do we not see the powerful, glorious manifestation of God’s glory?

2 Cor 4:1-6 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; (2) But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. (3) But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: (4) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (5) For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. (6) For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (KJV)

Satan’s Deception

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (KJV)

We read in our theme verses that the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who do not believe. We also read in the book of Revelation that Satan is the one who has deceived the entire world. Consider with me the possibility that a dark, spiritual atmosphere of satanic deception covers this planet. The goal of this deception is to darken the mind of creation to the glorious revelation of God. This fact is an important point when we consider the corruption of human flesh with sin and deception. Satan is the Father of Lies (Jn 8:44) therefore it would be logical assume that his kingdom of darkness would be filled with deception since he is the prince of the power of the air (Eph 2:2).

Gospel Hid

hid - kalupto (kal-oop'-to/2572); akin to 2813 and 2928; to cover up (literally or figuratively): KJV-- cover, hide.

kalupto- (Thayer Greek/English Lexicon)

to hide, to veil

to hinder the knowledge of a thing

Lost - apollumi (ap-ol'-loo-mee/622); from 575 and the base of 3639; to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively: KJV-- destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.

apollumi- (Thayer Greek/English Lexicon)

1) to destroy

a) to put out of the way entirely, to abolish, to put an end to ruin

b) to render useless

c) to kill

d) to declare that one must be put to death

e) metaphorically, to devote or give over to the eternal misery in hell

f) to perish, to be lost, to be ruined, to be destroyed

2) to destroy, to lose

The Apostle Paul realized that it’s possible for the glorious gospel of Christ to be hid (covered up/veiled) in the minds of those who are lost. This verse causes some interesting questions.

Have we allowed Satan to blind our minds to our true identity in Jesus Christ? We read that "…we are more than conquerors through him…". Do we believe this verse of scripture or do we abide in a spiritually frustrated state because we put more faith in Satan’s deception than in God’s truth (Rom 8:37).

We see that the gospel of Christ is much more than our acceptance of the doctrine of salvation – in its narrow application and interpretation. The gospel of Christ is the totality of our walk and faith in the person of Jesus.

Blinded Minds

blind - tuphloo (toof-lo'-o/5186); from 5185; to make blind, i.e. (figuratively) to obscure: KJV-- blind.

tuphloo- (Thayer Greek/English Lexicon)

1) to blind, to make blind

2) in the New Testament, metaphorically, to blunt the mental discernment, to darken the mind

Being Blind

The Apostle Paul taught that the eternal gospel is veiled in the hearts of those who are lost in the deception and lie of Satan. Paul also realized that the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who do not believe (act in faith) in the light of God’s holy word. How can I be blind to the light of God? The Greek word for "Blind" has the New Testament application of our minds being blunted and obscured by the darkness of satanic deception.

2 Pet 1:2-9 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, (3) According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: (4) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (5) And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; (6) And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; (7) And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (8) For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. (KJV)

According to the Bible we are spiritually blind we have forgotten how the Holy Spirit purged us from our old sins.

Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: (KJV)

We blind ourselves spiritually when we fill our lives with religious pride and arrogance. We must know Christ in relationship not in doctrine.

Eph 4:17-19 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, (18) Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (19) Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. (KJV)

We also blind ourselves when we allow our hearts to be filled with human reason and logic. Our spiritual understanding is darkened when we conform ourselves to this world and frustrate the transformation of the Holy Spirit (Rom 12:2).

I Jn 2:11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. (KJV)

We also blind ourselves to the glorious light of God when we "hate" our brothers (to love less/treat with indifference). The greatest deception we encounter as blood bought Christians is to live our lives in our lifeless religious dogma and not see our brothers in need.

Believe not - apistos (ap'-is-tos/571); from 1 (as a negative particle) and 4103; (actively) disbelieving, i.e. without Christian faith (specially, a heathen); (passively) untrustworthy (person), or incredible (thing): KJV-- that believeth not, faithless, incredible thing, infidel, unbeliever (-ing).

apistos- (Thayer Greek/English Lexicon)

1) unfaithful, faithless, (not to be trusted, perfidious)

2) incredible; used of things

3) unbelieving, incredulous without trust (in God)

It’s so easy to think that it is impossible for Christians to be counted with the unbelievers of this world. It we think that unbelief is only a lack of faith in the gospel of God maintained by fallen sinners, then we have missed the simple truth of this principle.

Can God consider us trustworthy, faithful Christians? Have we been faithful to our call and ministry?

1 Tim 1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; (KJV)

Consider this statement made by the Apostle Paul. After God counted him faithful to his calling, God put him into the ministry. Have we allowed unbelief to rob us of the fullness awaiting us in Jesus Christ?

The dark cloud of satanic deception that covers the earth seeks for the slightest corruption of human unbelief. Like a parasite, satanic deception will affix itself to the sin of unbelief causing the mind to become blind to the area infected with unbelief. For example, a Christian who has rejected the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (with the evidence of speaking in tongues) because of the false doctrine that this experience is of the devil, has allowed the parasite of satanic deception to affix to their unbelief. As long as unbelief is present in our hearts Satan has legal right to blind our minds to the light of the glorious Gospel found in Jesus Christ.

Face of Jesus

How can I break free from the satanic deception that is blinding my mind? Every Christian should ask this question, and seek an honest answer. We read in verse 6 that God gave light considerable power over spiritual darkness, and He has allowed this light to shine in our hearts. If this is true, then why are we being frustrated in our spiritual walk when God’s light has legal authority to shine in our hearts? One word will answer this question and that one word is "Unbelief".

In order to enjoy the glorious light of the gospel of Christ we must look in only one place to find it, and that place is the face of Jesus.

2 Cor 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (KJV)

We must realize that the face of Jesus can only be found through intimate relationship with Him. Our relationship with Jesus must be a progressive revelation of His person, because we are changed into the same image of Christ that we experience - from glory to glory. It all we have of Christ is our religious dogma then we are most miserable. An intimate relationship with Jesus demands an investment of time and faith on our part. The face of Jesus will only be revealed to those who diligently seek Him (Heb 11:6), because Jesus is not obligated to reveal Himself to the casual inquirer. We may see the face of Jesus in Bible study, or prayer. We may also see Him in worship and Christian service. There is no restriction of the avenue of revelation the only requirement is patience and diligence.

Final Deception

II Th 2:7-12 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. (8) And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: (9) Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, (10) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: (12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (KJV)

We read in these verses that at the end of the age, just prior to the coming of Jesus, Satan will be given the authority by God to deceive the world with signs and lying wonders. This period of human history is known as the tribulation caused by the Antichrist. The world will reject the truth of God and rage against His anointed calling for the casting off the restraints of moral living. Because of this horrific sin, God will send strong delusion to the nations of the earth in order that they might believe a lie and fall into the destruction of their unrighteousness.

Rev 13:14-18 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. (15) And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. (16) And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: (17) And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (18) Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (KJV)

We read that the Antichrist will deceive all those who dwell on the earth with his lying signs and wonders. The danger in this deception is found in the fact that all who will not believe this deception will be killed.

Rev 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. (KJV)

Revelation also teaches us that the agents of this world wide deception will be the great men of the earth. Men who control the media, finance, academia, and the military will appeal to the corruption of human unbelief. Again we see satanic lies following the sin of unbelief.

The only hope for the human race is the glorious gospel found in the face of Jesus Christ.
